WHAT WILL I LEARN?

This course has a focus on examining different types of te taiao (environments) across Aotearoa New Zealand and the globe. 

This includes:

The different natural and cultural processes that have shaped ngā taiao.

How people and te taiao are connected. 


Contexts: 

Fluvial processes in Hawke’s Bay and Aotearoa awa, the Amazon, Ganges and the Nile. There is a field trip in Term 1 to collect data. 

Climatic processes including climate change and extreme weather events - Cyclone Gabrielle, Pacific cyclones, USA/Gulf of Mexico hurricanes.

Population Processes including climate refugees and migration to and within Aotearoa/New Zealand and India.

4 Level 1 Achievement Standards – 20 credits

Beyond school, Geography can be a pathway to further education and training related to a range of sectors such as:
primary industries, services, social and community, manufacturing and technology, construction and infrastructure, creative industries.
At university level, pathways are available in a range of areas. Ākonga might concentrate on Physical Geography, Social and Political Sciences, Development Studies, Migration Studies, Resource and Environmental Management, Geographic Information Systems, Geology, or Urban Planning. Ākonga with a base in Geography can use their knowledge to enrich a career in engineering, science, law, management, commerce, or technology.

Geography is a foundation for any work that focuses on connections in te taiao.
